The HP 4600 color laser printer is a medium to large work group printer with features and equipment meant for high class printing; the printer sells for around $2,000.00.

This color laser printer is run using a 400 MHz processor and comes installed with 96 MB of SDRAM and a maximum of 416 MB. While the HP 4600 has good processing speeds, it falls short on compatible systems by only supporting Windows and Mac systems. The printer comes with a standard 600 sheets of input which is a bit small considering its price, but additional media trays may be added for up to 1100 sheets; duplexing is also an optional feature on the base model as well as an optional 10 GB hard drive, included on the 4600hdn. A large array of networking options are available, standard on higher end models, such as an internal print server of 10/100BaseTX Ethernet, a 802.11b wireless Token Ring, as well as USB and serial inputs which is on par with other printers in class.

Print speeds are identical for black and white and color documents at 17 pages per minute and the first printed page is out in 17 seconds, a little faster than some competitors. The devices are equipped with HP’s Image REt 2400 image enhancement technology which produces consistent prints in great clarity. Monochrome documents showed little if any signs of degradation but color images did show a slight separation between colors. Not a large problem but if you are image intensive you may seek a different unit. A maximum media weight of 163 g/m2 is possible with the HP 4600 series and it has an 85,000 monthly duty cycle well suited to the medium work group. Printing costs are a bit higher than similar printers as the HP 4600 toner and imaging unit is a single assembly; rough estimates put black and white documents at $.02 per page and color documents could range form $.09 to $.28 depending upon their usage and when they run out. Of course the HP 4600 is equipped with HP’s administration software which is second to none.
