HP 5000, 5100 Series Monochromatic Printer

Monochromatic printing is the cornerstone of any business or office and either of the HP LaserJet 5000 or HP LaserJet 5100 will supply the requirements of a small work group. Priced around $450.00 the printer is inexpensive and delivers average print speeds, although other models in its class for the same money print almost twice as fast. Processors are somewhat slower but get the job done for black and white printing needs. The HP 5000 has a 100 MHz processor while the 5100 supports a 300 MHz processor; if you need higher quality graphics and gray scales choose the HP 5100 as it also has a higher base memory.

Duplexing is optional on all of the models and comes standard on a few of the higher end 5100 models. The HP 5000 series supports PCL 6 and PCL 5E language simulations and the 5100 series adds to these PostScript 3 and HP GL/2. Supported operating systems and platforms are quite limited by the Hewlett Packard 5000 series which only supports Windows systems; the 5100 is slightly better but only additionally supports Mac systems, sorry no Linux or UNIX for the base models; however, the higher end models like the 5100tn and 5100dtn will support UNIX and Linux systems as well.

Expanding the base models networking is done through the use of EIO slots, and a parallel port is standard on all models to assist those end users with slightly older systems and components. Additional paper trays may be added for an increased capacity providing less interaction and less down time for employees which increases efficiency and performance. These are wide format printers from Hewlett Packard and can print full bleed documents on tabloid sized media. HP’s InstantOn technology enables the fuser to heat more rapidly producing the first and subsequent pages quicker than other printers in its class and at 1200 by 1200dpi resolution.

The HP LaserJet 5000 and 5100 have a wealth of features and great paper handling to suit large format printing, but the base models are limited to Mac and Windows operating systems.
