The HP LaserJet 4200 monochromatic printer offers impressive text print speeds and expandability options for a busy work group; the printer starts at around $225.00.

Enabling the printer is a 300 MHz processor paired with a 48 MB of base memory which you will certainly need to upgrade; a maximum of 416 MB is allowed. These printers only support Windows and Mac systems but make up for it by having a wealth of expansion options, all of which are not found on the average printer in this class. A maximum of 2,600 sheets of input via additional paper trays, and optional duplexer which is standard on higher end models, stapler/stacker finishers and a 5 GB hard drive may be added, although these come at an increased price. Unfortunately, networking is not standard on the base model and there is no USB support. Networking comes at an additional price or on models such as the HP 4200n, 4200tn, and 4200dtn.

HP has designed this printer series with their instant on fuser technology enabling the first printed page to be out in less than 10 seconds. Text is printed better than any other printer in class at 25 pages per minute and in uncommon clarity while images slowed the speed down to 8 pages per minute. Images are produced in with well defined edges and with little to no deterioration. Resolution for the HP 4200 series is 1200 by 1200 dpi and features the HP Image REt, HP ProRes 1200, and HP FastRes 1200 enhancement for consistent printing; this series also is capable of using the UltraPrecise toner cartridges for increased toner yield. A large 150,000 monthly duty cycle corresponds with the low cost per text page of $.02 and images are slightly higher at $.09.
