OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer.  It is used to denote a toner cartridge that is produced directly by the manufacturer of the printer.  In other words, an OEM cartridge for an HP printer is one manufactured directly by HP.  While printer manufacturers often try to persuade customers into buying only OEM toner cartridges, they are not always the best option for a few different reasons, the number one reason being price.

Remanufactured cartridges are created by taking an empty OEM cartridge, cleaning it, inspecting and replacing parts when necessary and then refilling and resealing the cartridge.  While reusing a used cartridge may sound less reliable than a brand new cartridge, remanufactured cartridges are designed to meet or exceed the standards of OEM cartridges.  In fact, remanufacturing cartridges can have many benefits over OEM cartridges.

The major benefit of remanufactured cartridges is a lower price.  Reusing parts from an empty cartridge saves manufacturing costs, making it less expensive than producing brand new cartridges.  This savings can then be passed on to the consumer, resulting in a lower purchase price.

The second major benefit is reduced waste.  Many empty toner cartridges end up in landfills each year, as consumers throw them away and replace them with a new cartridge.  The remanufacturing process recycles used cartridges, which is a much more eco-friendly option.  Since almost every part of the original toner cartridge is preserved, almost none of it gets wasted.

When buying remanufactured cartridges, it is important to buy from a company with a satisfaction guarantee.  Reputable companies will stand behind the quality of their products and guarantee that their remanufactured cartridges will meet or exceed the quality of an OEM cartridge.  If you purchase remanufactured cartridges from a reputable seller, you can rest assured that you are getting a quality product for a lower price and also doing your part to reduce waste.
