The HP Color LaserJet 5500 and 5550 printers deliver image enhancement technologies producing consistent printed color documents; it is a more expensive model priced with all of the bells and whistles around $3,300.

Connections found on the HP Color LaserJet 5500 include an infrared port and a parallel port helping those with older systems to use the HP laser printer, which is not always provided. Networking, unfortunately, is not standard on the base models but can be added for an additional charge. Higher end models have 10/100BaseEthernet connections standard. The HP 5500 and HP 5550 come equipped with base memories of 96 MB and 160 MB respectively. The HP 5550 boasts a 533 MHz processor, 400 MHz on the 5500, perfect for larger and more complex documents, and both printers support a wide range of operating systems such as SuSE Linux, UNIX, Windows, and Mac to name a few a bit larger range than some of its competitors.

Print quality on the 5500 will suffice for most office applications but the 600 dpi by 600 dpi, but falls a little short in image definition compared to other printers in class.; the HP 5550 has slightly improved graphics production. REt Image enhancement technology is featured on both series of printers and will bring 2400 dpi, on the 5500 and 3600 dpi, on the 5550, to the printed documents. Cost per printed color document at 5% coverage using the high capacity HP 5500 toner and HP 5550 toner cartridges is close to $.11 per page but varies by coverage and complexity. Medium work groups will be pleased with the 120,000 page per month duty cycle which ensures device longevity.

With their quick processors and moderate cost per printed page the HP Color LaserJet 5500 and 5550 are fit for most network work group needs, but the printer is priced higher than other printers in its class.
